TRADERS RESIST AMA’s SUDDEN EVICTION NOTICE AT OPERA SQUARE METRO: VOW TO FIGHT Demolition PLANS.
Traders at Opera Square Metro are locked in a bitter dispute with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) over the latter’s sudden decision to evict them without prior notice. The traders received a letter from AMA, demanding that they vacate the premises within a week, with an ultimatum set for tomorrow.
AMA insists that traders obtain permits by Wednesday, July 31st, 2024, or face complete removal of their shops for non-compliance. However, the traders argue that AMA’s actions are unlawful, as the market is their sole source of income for supporting their families and paying school fees.
Elizabeth Kankam, a trader, expressed frustration, stating that AMA failed to provide prior notice of its plans to demolish and sell the land. “They should have informed us or provided alternative arrangements. Where are we supposed to go? We have nowhere else to go.”
The traders have vowed to resist any attempts to demolish their stores, warning that they will take action against anyone or group involved in the eviction process.
“We won’t sit back and allow anyone to demolish our stores. We demand that the AMA chief executive explains why they’re attempting to build without our consent. We will not tolerate any further action without our input.”
