NYA launches National Youth Action Group on Climate Change.
The National Youth Authority (NYA) on Thursday, August 17, launched the National Youth Action Group on Climate Change (NYAGCC).
NYAGCC is an umbrella body that brings together various youth-led organisations and other relevant stakeholders with the intention of addressing the dire challenges presented by climate change.
In addition to youth-led organisations, the Group’s membership comprises Persons with Disability (PWD), academia, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), UN Systems, students, private practitioners and State Ministries, Departments and Agencies such as the NYA, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Forestry Commission, Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Ministry of Gender and Social Protection.
In effect, the sole aim of the NYAGCC is to harmonize the activities of these organizations through organizational collaboration, partnership development, capacity building, and advocacy, and policy influence in order to achieve a meaningful impact in promoting climate action in Ghana.
The launch of the NYAGCC took place at the just-ended National Youth Conference on Climate Action and Environmental Sustainability, held at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development in Somanya.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Pius Enam Hadzide explained the motive behind the establishment of this Group as “creating a unified and empowered youth force that spearheads climate action and governance in Ghana.”
“In a world where the effects of our actions ripple beyond borders and generations, it is inarguable that the young minds of today will have to bear the greatest burden. On a far more positive note, it is these same young minds who possess the greatest potential to transform challenges into opportunities,” he submitted.
“While the challenges that climate change poses to our world are immense, they are surmountable. Our response must, therefore, be resolute, innovative and holistic. It is here that the concept of “green skills” becomes a beacon of hope.”
The NYAGCC is, therefore, envisioned to foster the active involvement of young people in climate action through knowledge sharing and learning, resource mobilization and community engagement and action.
The National Youth Conference on Climate Action and Environmental Sustainablity was organised under the theme “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World”.
The Conference forms part of the activities scheduled by the NYA for August as part of the National Youth Month Celebration.
