New electricity and water tariffs adjustment will not affect companies and Businesses – PURC Justifies
The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) as part of their quarterly review of Electricity and water tariffs has announced the 3rd Quarter adjustment of Electricity and Water tariffs which was pegged to 4.22% and 1.18% respectively effective September 1, 2023.
Speaking in an interview with Mrs. Julia Antwiwaa, the Public Relations Officer for PURC in the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions on Techiman Based Winners FM’s Breakfast Show, she indicated that the new tariff adjustment was necessitated by a lot of factors hence Ghanaians must bear with them for effective delivery of their mandate to serve the masses adequately.
She noted that the new tariff adjustment is only applicable to residential customers so businesses and artisans who use electricity for their work will not be affected by the new price increment because those persons already pay higher tariffs so adding to existing tariffs will be difficult for them to bear hence the decision.
She added that the new adjustment doesn’t affect lifeline customers who consume between 0-30KWh every month but once you cross 0-30KWh with the month, you are not classified as a lifeline customer, therefore you are entitled to pay the new adjustments.
Madam Julia Antwiwaa added that it was not intentional for PURC to continue adjusting utility tariffs but the move was necessitated by the continuous surge of inflation, fuel prices, and the Dollar-to-cedi ratio which are the basic contributing factors that initiated the increased adjustments of the tariffs hence Ghanaians must bear with them despite the economic challenges to help them get the necessary resources for effective power production.
