In a significant portion of his address, President John Dramani Mahama addressed the shifting dynamics of the global landscape and its implications for Ghana. He pointed to a clear decline in the economic dominance of the G7 nations, while simultaneously noting the consistent rise of the BRICS nations and its members, citing data from 2023 showing the G7 held 30% of global GDP, versus the 37.3% held by the BRICS and its members.

President Mahama acknowledged that this shift in global power brings many economic questions for Ghana, asking “Where do we fit in this geopolitical maelstrom?” He raised a concern about emerging technologies such as Artificial intelligence as he cited the potential financial and national security risks stemming from AI and the spread of misinformation.

He went on to emphasize the critical importance of strong regional ties and the need for collaboration with Ghana’s neighbors, noting the shared cultural ties and shared ethnic identities that extend beyond national borders.

He warned of threats from climate change, highlighting the dangers of melting ice and the potential for the release of ancient viruses.
