Include uterine fibroid into NHIS treatment list
The Executive Director of FibFA Fibroid Foundation Africa, Elizabeth Korasare, has appealed to the government to enrol uterine fibroid onto the national health insurance scheme NHIS treatment list.
Including fibroid onto the NHIS (National Health Insurance Scheme) means that the cost of treating fibroids, a common condition affecting about 80% of women in their reproductive age, would be covered by the health insurance plan, allowing patients to access the necessary medical procedures like myomectomy (surgical removal of fibroids) without having to fully bear the financial burden themselves.
According to Dr. Elizabeth Korasare, covering the cost of diagnosis and treatment, would alleviate the financial stress associated with managing fibroids, especially for individuals with limited income.
She said it is the aim and focus of FibFA Fibroid Foundation Africa to push an agenda that will have at least 50 per cent of the cost of fibroid surgery covered under the NHIS.
This was disclosed at the foundation’s recent two days workshop on uterine fibroid advocacy.
Forty-seven participants from across the country received certificates and resource materials to enhance uterine fibroid advocacy in their respective communities.
