”Gov’t is poised to transform the road sector”- Transport minister
Minister of transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah has reiterated government’s commitment to digitalize the operation and regulation of commercial transport services in Ghana. The move, he has said, would help reduce human interface as well as making transport more accessible and convenient.
In this vein, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) under the auspices of the Transport ministry has launched “TransportGhana” with a robust infrastructure in place to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of transport operations.
The “TransportGhana” project according to NRSA is driven by Telematics technology to operationalize the registration and issuance of operating license to Commercial Road Transport Service Companies, Unions, Organizations or Associations. It also has Electronic Pre-Departure checks to ensure minimum operational safety requirements of fleet and drivers at terminals and rest stops by transport companies or operators.
Mr. Ofori Asiamah addressing the media at the inauguration of “TransportGhana” indicated that the initiative reaffirms the government’s commitment to transmute the transport sector.
“I am with strong conviction and without doubt that as we move towards an increasingly automated and connected world, we can embrace new technologies to enhance the efficiency, safety, and sustainability of transport operations”.
So the “TransportGhana” Project aims to ease registration, licensing and permitting processes for road transport companies, unions, associations, transport departments and units of private companies and MDAs, he re-emphasized.
The transport minister expounded that the TransportGhana will facilitates the provision of cashless payment options for transport fares and other road transport-related services whereas allowing road users to make informed choices on transport-related services from a portal or mobile app based on regulatory ratings by the Authority.
Mr. Ofori Asiamah was quick to caution transport operators ahead of the yuletide by urging them to take necessary measures to ensure that vehicles leaving the terminals are in good condition. He further challenged motorists and commuters to remain focused and propagate the National Road Safety Authority’s Christmas Road Safety Campaign theme, “Stop Speeding and Stay Alive” to help reduce road crashes.
