EC cites party supporters’ actions for delayed results collation
The Electoral Commission (EC) has attributed the delay in collating and announcing the results of the 2024 presidential elections to disruptions caused by supporters of political parties at various collation centers across the country.
Speaking at a press briefing on December 8, 2024, the EC Chairperson explained that the presence of party supporters at constituency and regional collation centers has made it difficult for officials to carry out their duties efficiently.
“In their anxiety and excitement, some supporters have besieged our collation centers, hindering the movement of results and the work of our staff,” she stated.
The EC revealed that it has engaged the leadership of the political parties to call their supporters to order. Despite these challenges, the commission assured Ghanaians that it is on course to deliver credible results.
The EC disclosed that 23 hours after polls closed, results from one region have been received at the National Collation Center, with others expected in the coming hours.
The collation process, governed by CI 127, involves several stages, including verification by party agents and observers at the polling station, constituency, and regional levels before results are transmitted to the national center.
While the EC acknowledged public concerns about the delay, it emphasized the importance of adhering to this robust process to ensure transparency and accuracy.
The EC Chairperson urged citizens to remain calm as the collation process continues. “This elaborate and inclusive system ensures that the results reflect the true will of the people,” she assured.
The commission noted that while it has declared results within 48 hours in previous elections, it is working within the standard 72-hour timeframe for this election. However, it remains committed to declaring the results as soon as they are finalized.
The EC reiterated its dedication to upholding the integrity of the electoral process. “It is the will of the people, as expressed at the polls, that will be declared at the end of this process,” the EC Chairperson affirmed.
The commission called on all stakeholders to exercise restraint and allow the collation process to proceed smoothly, promising a credible and transparent outcome.
