The Greater Accra Regional Directorate of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has commemorated this year’s National Chocolate Week with a weeklong celebration geared towards promoting the consumption of cocoa products.

The climax, which was in partnership with Kempinski Hotel, also served as a platform to create awareness of the country’s rich cocoa heritage.

Led by the Greater Accra Regional Director of the GTA, Alexander Nketiah, a delegation from the authority donated chocolates to patients in the pediatric and postnatal units of the Mamprobi Government Hospital.

Students of the University of Ghana City Campus also participated in a lively street quiz, answering questions about cocoa and chocolate in Ghana.

Students who participated in the quiz were awarded with cocoa products.

Mr Nketiah explained that the chocolate celebration, which commenced 20 years ago to promote chocolate consumption and foster healthier attitudes towards the Valentine’s Day celebration had evolved into a vibrant celebration of Ghana’s rich cocoa heritage, encouraging the youth to embrace local products and their associated health benefits

He expressed gratitude to the sponsors, including Kempinski, who donated chocolate cookies to the hospital patients.

Mr Nketiah emphasised the importance of community engagement, urging stakeholders to consider adopting hospitals and health units as part of their corporate social responsibility efforts.

“The celebration of love should not be confined to one day. It is a continuous process,” he said, adding, “As we commemorate Chocolate Day, let’s promote domestic tourism and encourage everyone to share the day with their loved ones responsibly.”

He said the initiative had consistently focused on elevating Ghana’s cocoa industry, which is deeply rooted in the nation’s culture and economy.

With a vision to encourage healthier consumption habits and foster a sense of community, Chocolate Day, he said, would continue to serve as a reminder of the sweetness that comes from caring for one another.

“As the weeklong celebration comes to an end, the message remains clear: love, much like cocoa, is best when shared responsibly and generously,”
