At the forefront of this initiative is Mr. Edwin Zu-Cudjoe, Executive Director of Social Enterprise Ghana, who believes that adopting a 24-hour work culture is crucial for staying competitive.
With over 200,000 social enterprises operating in Ghana, Zu-Cudjoe argues that the current 8-hour workday is limiting the country’s potential.
“By embracing a 24-hour economy, we can increase productivity, attract foreign investment, and create a vibrant nightlife that showcases Ghana’s rich culture,” he explained.
To achieve this ambitious goal, Zu-Cudjoe is urging the government to lead by example. He recommends that government ministries, parliament, and the presidency adopt a 24-hour work culture, paving the way for the private sector to follow suit. Improved infrastructure, including reliable energy supply and efficient transportation systems, is also essential for supporting a 24-hour economy.
The benefits of a 24-hour economy are numerous. It can lead to increased productivity, job creation, and improved service accessibility. For instance, a 24-hour economy can ensure that healthcare services are available around the clock, addressing emergencies promptly and efficiently.
However, there are also challenges to consider. These include infrastructure hurdles, such as reliable power sources and secure transportation systems, as well as the potential strain on human capital ¹.
Despite these challenges, Zu-Cudjoe remains optimistic about Ghana’s potential. “We’ve seen the success of the free secondary education policy. Now it’s time to take the next step and unlock Ghana’s full potential,” he noted.
