The Coalition of CSOs on Migration, Ghana (CCMG) marked International Migrants Day with a football competition and wreath-laying ceremony to honor African migrants who have lost their lives on the Mediterranean Sea.
The event, held at the MC Dan Astro Turf Sports Complex in Labadi, Accra, brought together migrants from various countries, including Nigeria and Liberia, to compete in a friendly football match.
In a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, Mr. Eric Kwakye Fiasa, CEO of Right to Be Free and National Coordinator of CCMG, paid tribute to the countless migrants who have perished in their quest for a better life.
“Today, we remember the mothers, fathers, children, brothers, and sisters who have lost their lives in the treacherous waters of the Mediterranean Sea,” Mr. Fiasa said. “They were not just statistics, but dreamers seeking a future beyond the shores of their own countries.”
Mr. Fiasa called on the international community to take action to prevent such tragedies, demanding safe and legal pathways for migration, an end to the criminalization of migrants and refugees, and a world where every person has the right to a safe and dignified life.
In a message to Ghana’s youth, Mr. Fiasa cautioned against the dangers of irregular migration, urging them to seek opportunities within their own country.
“Let’s create a Ghana and an Africa that gives its youth and children hope in their own countries,” Mr. Fiasa said. “Let’s work together to create a world where no one is forced to risk their life in pursuit of a better future.”
The event was attended by representatives from various civil society organizations, migrant communities, and government agencies, all united in their commitment to promoting the rights and dignity of migrants.
