Accra, Ghana – Dec 9, 2024 – Ghana’s Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, has officially announced John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the country’s presidential election.

“It is finished” were the finals words of the EC Chair Mensa after she declared that Mahama, the candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had secured a landslide victory with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast.

The presidential election, held on December 7, saw Mahama face off against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP). Bawumia secured 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61% of the total valid votes cast.

At a press conference on Dec 9, Mensa stated that the election saw a voter turnout of 60.9% across 267 constituencies, with 11,191,422 valid votes cast and 239,109 rejected ballots.

According to her, although some parliamentary seats remain outstanding due to disputes, the NDC has secured a clear majority in parliament.

The Electoral Commission’s declaration of Mahama as president-elect marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s democratic process. However, the post-election period has been marred by violence, resulting in three deaths and multiple injuries.
